Brief description

The main objective of this course is to prepare students for a period of university study and / or work in an English speaking health system. The module focuses on the development of the participant’s ability to communicate effectively in a variety of contexts by practising and refining the key language competencies: speaking, reading, writing and listening. Special attention will be paid to improving participants’ writing skills for academic purposes. In the speaking component students will focus on improving their oral skills with an emphasis on presentation skills.

Teaching and learning outcomes

The module is divided into two components: “Language in the Health Care System” and “Geopolitical background and cultural competencies”. The following aspects will be focussed: ? History ? National characteristics ? Political and legal systems ? Health Care System ? Tertiary education system ? International relations

Remark on the assessment methods

The portfolio exam is worth a total of 100 points and consists of a 30-minute written exam, a term paper, a presentation, and an oral exam. Each element is weighted with 25 points. (Elements: K30 + HA + PR + M; Points: 25 + 25 + 25 + 25).

Term paper as part of the portfolio examination: approx. 10-15 pages

Presentation as part of the portfolio examination: approx. 8-12 minutes

Recommended prior knowledge

Successful completion of module B1 or equivalent previous knowledge

Knowledge Broadening

After successful completion of the module the student will be able to:


1. Describe main differences between the Health Care systems of the host and the home country,
2. Manage a therapeutical patient encounter, in particular to give precise exercise instructions and discuss further treatment options,
3. Write an essay on a health care topic.
