International for over three decades
The Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science has a long tradition as an international faculty. Since the 1980s, it offers European degrees in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering with an integrated year abroad. Also students who attend regular courses are showing growing interest in going abroad: whether for a study semester, an internship or to work on a thesis.
The Faculty cooperates with around 70 partner universities on all five continents. Each semester, 40 to 50 visiting students complete a semester or an internship in one of the 47 laboratories of the faculty. In addition to the student and staff exchange, the cooperation includes joint research projects, scientific publications and participation in conferences.
The IuI International Faculty Office is available to assist all visiting students and scholars with supportive services.

After classes, I spent my free time with other international students, studying, training, and having fun. Once a week we had dinner together in our flat, and everybody cooked something from his or her home country. I am glad to have found friends from Germany and other countries. Osnabrück is a beautiful city, and it is easy to orientate in. I like German nature and landscape. There are good train connections between cities, and many of them are free for students. The course in Osnabrück was a good opportunity to practice English and to meet students from different cultures. I would recommend it to everyone!"
As a visiting student, you are enrolled at a partner university in the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science and will spend one to two semesters with us here in Osnabrück. You have the following options available:
1. You study in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program (most courses are offered in German)
2. You complete one of the English-language courses:
- European Project Semester (September to February, Bachelor’s level)
- International Applied Materials Sciences Semester (September to February, Master's level)
- International Computer Science Program (March to August and September to February, Master's level)
- International Design Project Semester (March to August, Bachelor’s level) or
- Quality Engineering (March to August, Master’s level)
3. You write your thesis in a laboratory

As a visiting student, you can complete an internship or a whole semester in the many laboratories of the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science.
You may also attend the European Project Semester at the undergraduate level.

Exchange students from partner universities and free movers must meet the requirements as stated on this page to be admitted as visiting students at the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science (ECS):
Registration as a full-time student at a university outside Germany
You must be enrolled at a university abroad during the whole period of the planned stay in Germany and you should have completed at least one semester at your home university already before coming to us.
Prior nomination by your home university before submitting the online registration
Before you submit your online application, the International Faculty Office expects to receive a nomination e-mail from your university to:

We will need the basic data of your study or internship stay: your contact details, your study level (Bachelor/Master), exchange period (winter or summer semester), duration, exchange purpose (study/internship semester or Bachelor/Master thesis), study area.
Good command of English and/or German
Visiting students have to meet the language requirements for a study or internship semester resp. as fixed by the Osnabrück UAS.

Application procedure for visiting students
Please apply by the following dates for the respective semester or for your English-language course:
- Winter semester (September to February), European Project Semester, International Computer Science Program
March 1 to May 15 of the same year
Nomination by the home university by April 30
- Summer semester (March to August), International Computer Science Program, International Design Project Semester, Quality Engineering
September 1 to November 1 of the previous year
Nomination by the home university by October 15
- Internship, practical semesters, theses
Application possible during the whole year
In Germany, the education at universities is mainly financed by taxpayers. Therefore, the students usually do not have to pay tuition fees.
However, every student is obliged to pay a semester fee (not to be confused with tuition fees). Semester fees not only cover administrative costs (such as enrolment or re-registration fees), but also include a social contribution to the Studentenwerk (local student services organisation) for running the mensas, cafeterias, halls of residence, and advice services. The semester fees also contribute to the official body that represents students at the institution, such as the AStA (student union), and also go towards funding semester tickets for public transport. - Students from partner universities: reduced semester fees The semester fee is approx. 360 euros per semester but the exact amount varies from semester to semester. The part for the administrative fee is 75 euros and that part is waived for visiting students from partner universities who come to Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences on exchange.
- Free movers: payment of full semester fees If you come from a university with which we have not concluded a cooperation agreement, you will be considered as a free mover and have to pay the full semester fee.
In Germany we say “Every beginning is difficult”. A buddy will assist you in finding your way around Osnabrück and the university.
A buddy is a student in a higher semester. You will get the name and e-mail address of your buddy already at home before your arrival in Osnabrück. The buddy picks you up from the train station, helps you move into your residence and shows you the campus and the university. So you have a "buddy" in Osnabrück right from the start. And who knows? Perhaps it is the beginning of a good friendship?
